Course Overview

SDI makes it possible for you to complete all of the academic requirements for your entry-level scuba diver certification online. You can get started right now and, when you are done, you will then complete your in-water skill-development sessions and final open-water training dives at a local SDI Dive Center close to home, or at a popular vacation destination. It’s that simple! Now, go dive the world with your SDI certification.

Course prerequisites:

• Minimum age 18, 10 through 17 with parental consent
• Students between the ages of 10 through 14 may obtain a SDI Junior Open Water Scuba Diver Certification if the following conditions are met: junior students are to train and dive under the direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or active dive professional.

*Note: When a SDI Junior Open Water Diver reaches the age of 15, they may upgrade to a SDI Open Water Scuba Diver certification by completing the Junior Open Water Upgrade Form and submitting it to World HQ.

What you can expect to learn

The SDI Open Water Scuba Diver Course will cover all of the necessary skills and knowledge for open water scuba diving, including:

• The aquatic environment: vision, light, sound, heat loss, tides, currents, waves, surge, etc.
• Physics and physiology: buoyancy, pressure, air spaces, breathing compressed air, mixed gases, etc.
• Dive equipment selection, assembly, use and maintenance
• Dive planning
• Basic scuba skills including
  • Partial/Full mask clear at depth
  • Breathing and swimming underwater without a mask
  • Buoyancy compensator device (BCD) use
  • Buoyancy Control: hovering, controlled ascents, and controlled descents
  • Regulator use: Breathing, clearing, and recovery on surface and at depth
  • Computer use:
    • Reading and understanding data
    • Understanding functions of computer
  • Use of gauges
  • Underwater Communication
  • Rescue techniques:
    • Tired diver tows
    • Cramp relief
