{"id":6281,"date":"2021-04-12T21:32:11","date_gmt":"2021-04-12T20:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rebreatherzone.com\/?page_id=6281"},"modified":"2026-01-11T15:23:33","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T14:23:33","slug":"tdi-cave-sidemount-diver","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.rebreatherzone.com\/en\/scuba-training\/oc-cave-training\/tdi-cave-sidemount-diver\/","title":{"rendered":"TDI Cave Sidemount Diver"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3286\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rebreatherzone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/TDI-Logo.png\" alt=\"TDI Cavern Diver\" width=\"200\" height=\"101\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2>TDI Cave Sidemount Diver<\/h2>\n<p>This course is designed to teach certified cave divers how to safely utilize side-mounted primary<br \/>\ncylinders as an alternative to the traditional back-mounted configuration.<\/p>\n<h3>Qualifications of Graduates:<\/h3>\n<p>Upon successful completion of this course, graduates may engage in sidemount cave diving<br \/>\nactivities without direct supervision so long as the following limits are adhered to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Penetration is limited to the (1\/3) air rule<\/li>\n<li>Forty (40) msw \/ one hundred thirty (130) fsw maximum depth.<\/li>\n<li>Safety and decompression stops as appropriate or necessary.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain a continuous guideline.<\/li>\n<li>Proper cave diving equipment is used.<\/li>\n<li>Planned dives do not exceed diver\u2019s current certification level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Course prerequisites:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Be a minimum age of eighteen (18).<\/li>\n<li>Have a minimum certification of TDI Full Cave Diver or equivalent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Course Structure and Duration:<\/h3>\n<h4>Open Water Execution<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Three (3) cave dives are required with a minimum accumulated bottom time of ninety (90)<br \/>\nminutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Course Structure<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>TDI allows instructors to structure courses according to the number of students participating<br \/>\nand their skill level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Duration<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>The suggested number of classroom and briefing hours is four (4).<\/li>\n<li>Course must be taught over a minimum of two (2) days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Equipment:<\/h3>\n<p>The following material is required:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Instructors may use any text or materials that they feel help present these topics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following equipment is required for each student:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Dual cylinders, volume appropriate for planned dive, and student gas consumption.<\/li>\n<li>Two independent first and second stage regulators each with a submersible pressure gauge.<\/li>\n<li>Buoyancy compensator with power inflator appropriate for sidemount configuration.<\/li>\n<li>Exposure suit adequate for diving environment.<\/li>\n<li>Mask and fins.<\/li>\n<li>Two (2) line cutting devices.<\/li>\n<li>Three (3) battery powered lights \u2013 one (1) primary and two (2) back-ups, each with a burn<br \/>\ntime suitable for the planned dive time.<\/li>\n<li>Safety reel with a recommended minimum of thirty meters \/ one hundred (100) feet of<br \/>\nguideline.<\/li>\n<li>One (1) primary cave-diving reel per team with length appropriate for intended dive.<\/li>\n<li>Dive computer and additional depth and timing device (backup computer recommended).<\/li>\n<li>A minimum of three (3) directional markers.<\/li>\n<li>A minimum of three (3) non-directional markers.<\/li>\n<li>Appropriate number of jump and gap reels containing an appropriate amount of guideline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Required Skill Performance and Graduation Requirements<\/h3>\n<p>The following land drills must be covered during this course:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Land drills may be performed at the instructor\u2019s discretion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pre-dive drills:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use START before every dive<br \/>\n*START is an acronym for S-drill (Out of Gas drill and Bubble Check), Team (buddy equipment<br \/>\nchecks), Air (gas matching), Route (entry\/exit and planned path underwater, Tables (depth,<br \/>\nduration, waypoints and schedule)<\/li>\n<li>Stress analysis and mitigation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The student must perform the following in-water skills during cave dives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Demonstrate no-silting propulsion techniques (frog kick, modified frog kick, modified flutter<br \/>\nkick, backwards kick, helicopter turns, and hand pulling if appropriate for the environment)<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate adequate buoyancy control (ability to hover at fixed position in water column<br \/>\nwithout moving hands or feet)<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate adequate trim (ability to maintain proper position during the descent, bottom<br \/>\nand ascent portion of the dive)<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate the ability to perform the following exercises while maintaining trim and<br \/>\nbuoyancy in the water column:<br \/>\nA. Unclipping and attaching sidemount cylinders.<br \/>\nB.
